“God so loved the world that he gave…,” says John 3:16. This familiar verse underscores that giving and generosity emerge from love. God has given abundantly to us because he loves us beyond all measure. The question is, how will we respond to that love.

The question of response was posed to Peter in John 21. Jesus asked him, “Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you love me?” When Peter said, “Yes, I love you,” then Jesus’ command was, “Feed my sheep.”

Receiving the blessings of Jesus’ love and loving him back through our sharing of his love are two sides of the same coin. When, as part of our use of God’s gifts, we give to others and to God through the church, we honor and bless the One who first loved us. We are honoring God’s purposes by devoting the resources we hold to our shared mission as the church.

The question of how we use the gifts of God is a question of stewardship. For Christians, stewardship is a way of life that recognizes that everything we have is God’s and we are simply managing those resources on his behalf and for his purposes. Through our stewardship, we are the heart, spirit, and hands of God, reaching out in love to share with our world, setting tables that bless the world God so loved.
