The Fear of What is Not Like Us

Romans 5:1-11 | Few of our fears today are exploited with such danger to our souls as our fear of the other. Xenos, the Greek word at the root of our English “xenophobia” (fear of the other), is also the word the Bible uses to talk about love of strangers, aliens, outsiders. The default attitude of Christians must be hospitality toward the outsider, yet we demonize the outsider, scapegoat the other, and exclude those not like “us.” Christ is inviting us to a new relationship with the xenos through him.
